Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is a 2009 vampire movie that had everything going for it. Based on a critically acclaimed young adult series, the film follows a teenager named Darren as he encounters a secret world of vampires, a circus of lovable "freaks," and a tentative truce between two warring factions.
The most obvious draw for this film is its cast. John C. Reilly plays 200 year old vampire Larten Crepsley, a truly chilling starring role for an actor who has made a career out of being the bumbling sidekick. He delivers every line with a delicate balance of sarcasm and exposition. When introducing the titular circus, he establishes the setting in one simple and hilarious line: "I am so excited to be here in an anonymous small town which used to have character but is now just a bland suburb filled with chain stores and surrounded by slums."
One bright spark of this film is Josh Hutcherson, who at this point is still a few years away from reaching adaptation stardom with his role as Peeta in The Hunger Games. Hutcherson plays Steve, the best friend Darren becomes a half-vampire to save. Steve has always loved vampires and in the hopes of becoming one falls in with a bad crowd, the Vampaneze.
Still, the irreverent tone of the circus and the vampires makes one wonder what the world would have been like if Cirque du Freak became as popular as The Hunger Games. Would John C. Reilly finally have reached the leading man status he deserves? Would the "Little People" join Dobby and Gollum in terms of "weirdly adorable magical creatures?"

October is just around the corner, and that means more than just the arrival of Spooky Season. Every major streaming service is preparing for a brand new month of new content to deliver to their subscribers. Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, and Prime Video all have huge lists of new movies, TV shows, and specials set to be added over the course of the next few weeks.
One of the most popular comedies of the last few years is changing streaming hands next month. Schitt's Creek became such a beloved series in the United States because of its availability on Netflix, but the award-winning Canadian series is making the move to Hulu on October 3rd.
Like the "Morbius" comics, the film tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), a researcher hoping to cure his rare blood-borne illness. Morbius develops a treatment but mistakenly transforms himself into a living vampire with superhuman abilities and a craving for blood. Morbius eventually becomes a fugitive as he struggles to control his blood lust, while one of his closest friends, played by "Doctor Who" veteran Matt Smith, decides to use the treatment for more selfish purposes.
To show you just how popular Dark Shadows is, there have been lots of remakes over the years from the 1991 reboot on NBC to the Tim Burton directed film starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas. I just discovered an article from Variety written last year announcing a remake coming from The CW. This is wonderful news, because The CW has delivered some quality vampire series over the years. I will be checking this out whenever it happens.
This show was one of my absolute favorites, and unfortunately was canceled after only two seasons. Blood Ties, based on the Blood books by Tanya Huff, is about Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox), a former Toronto police officer turned PI. After meeting Henry Fitzroy (Kyle Schmid) a 470 year old vampire, they team up to solve crimes together.
Being Human, is a series about three roommates who are all supernatural beings. Josh (Sam Huntington) is a werewolf, Aidan (Sam Witwer) is a vampire, and Sally (Meaghan Rath) is a ghost. Despite all of this, they try as best as they can to live normal lives. Of course we know, there really is no such thing as a normal life for any type of supernatural being.
This series based on the books by Deborah Harkness is about Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) a historian and witch who uncovers Ashmole 782 a bewitched manuscript. Diana sets out to unravel the secrets of the manuscript and while doing so, meets Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode) a geneticist who happens to also be a vampire.
Matthew offers to help Diana despite the fact witches and vampires have a long history of not trusting one another. They end up forming an alliance to protect the book and all it holds and as they do, they become closer and start to fall in love.
After turning assassinated President Abraham Lincoln into a vampire from the first book, vampire Henry O. Sturges, Lincoln's vampire-hunting mentor, realizes he has gone against the rules of the Union of Vampires by doing so. Lincoln is horrified at becoming a vampire, as it turns him into the exact thing he has been fighting against all his life, and jumps out the window and burns himself to death.
Henry is summoned to New York City, the Union's headquarters, by their leader Adam Plantagenet, a highly respected older vampire, alive since 1305. He shows Henry boxes containing the heads of some of their emissaries along with a note from the mysterious "A. Grander VIII". He is tasked with finding and stopping this man from destroying more vampires. Plantagenet himself is killed soon after.
Henry decides to begin his hunt in London, England, under the guise of a textile importer. Unsure where first to go, he decides to find out the vampire presence here. It turns out that the Henry Irving, a famed actor in England, is a vampire. Wanting to get in touch with Irving, he tracks down and finds his assistant, Abraham "Bram" Stoker. Initially reluctant to allow Henry access to his charge, he relents when Henry reveals his vampirism. Stoker and his family quickly become one of Henry's close friends.
Along the way, Henry reveals some of the events from his life as a human and his early time as a vampire including turning his adopted daughter, the first English baby born in the "New World", Virginia Dare, into a vampire. His travels and adventures bring him across the world where he helps Arthur Conan Doyle and stops Jack the Ripper. He is also put into action as a United States Government agent, and becomes a highly decorated veteran of both World Wars. He also befriends inventor Nikola Tesla and assists in assassinating the feared mystic Rasputin. Grander is revealed to be Virginia Dare and Henry and Lincoln (revealed to be alive) track her down. They fight until Dare is killed by Henry but not before mortally wounding Lincoln.
Quiet teen Davis moves to a new town and is mistaken for a vampire by the most popular girl at school. With the help of his neighbor, Davis sets out to fool the school in light of his newfound popularity.
Fumitoshi Oizaki (Romeo Juliet) is directing the series at Encourage Films. Yoshihide Yuuzumi (Onee-chan ga Kita) is the assistant director. Hitomi Amamiya (Merc Storia: The Apathetic Boy and the Girl in a Bottle) is handling the script and series composition. Satomi Yonezawa is designing the characters. Tsubasa Ito (I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives.) is composing the music. Akari Kitō is performing the anime's ending theme song "Dear Doze Days."
The story centers on Dariel, a soldier in the Dark Lord's army who cannot use magic. Instead, he wields his intellect and initiative as an assistant to one of the Dark Lord's most trusted captains.
